Have you ever noticed this symbol at the top of blogs? It indicates there is an RSS feed available for that particular blog. If you look over to the left top of this screen, you can see the RSS image with the words “Subscribe in a Reader”.
So what is RSS and what is a Reader? I will be honest, it took me a long time to really understand RSS. Once it was explained to me in the correct terms- I got it. And it really is simple!
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (kind of funny that it means something simple but confuses so many!)
The problem was, I didn’t like the words Really Simple Syndication – because it didn’t seem simple when it was explained to me using terms such as “feed” and “reader”!
Let me explain it this way.
You are busy. But you want to keep up with what’s going on in the world through blogs and online news sources you respect and enjoy reading.
RSS is just another way of saying:
“Hey EarPopperNurse, I like what you have to say in this EarPopper blog. Can you let me know when you update the blog with new information?”
In fact, think of RSS as the “feed” for your morning newspaper. Who are the columnists you want included in your paper? What topics do you want to read about?
There are 2 ways to be notified that there is new amazing information written on this blog (and other sites with RSS). First, you can set up a free “reader” (your own customized newspaper online) or you can receive updates in your email inbox. You may be tempted to use email because it is most familiar… but once you try a reader you will be amazed at how much additional time you will save over email updates! It is free to set up a reader and there are some simple tutorials to help you get started.
In fact, here is a video I like that explains the RSS stuff in pretty simple terms – with both visuals and words:
Now that you understand RSS, here is a tutorial on getting started with Google Reader:

I think RSS should be instead named TST (Time Saving Tool) or WNT (What’s New Today) or my personal favorite IBYCTM (I’m Busy You Come to Me!)
So do not be intimidated by RSS or IBYCTM… use it to your advantage!
